“Women are the reason we do what we do”- Ericka Dotson on IWD 2021.
This International Women’s day, we got a chance to dive into the life of a woman entrepreneur; who is bold, fierce, fearless.
Ericka Dotson, the co-founder of Indique Virgin Hair Extensions showed us how she faced hardships and emerged with a “Stronger Than Ever” attitude.
How did you get into this line of work?
I entered the hair industry looking for a change, while working for several years in the tech-based tower site colocation industry. Eventually, I was burned out and craved a creative outlet. I knew there was more for me, and my potential to shine was untapped. I always had an interest in hair, and so, I decided to enroll in cosmetology school. This move into the field of beauty was the complete opposite of the tech industry. But, deep inside, I knew it was the right direction for me.
How do women add value to Indique hair?
Women are the reason we do what we do at Indique. The demand for hair extensions has increased over the years by women all over the world. Women’s lifestyles play a significant role in their daily goal to answer their hair needs. Whether it be a simple everyday hairstyle or special occasion, looks for birthdays, weddings, graduations, etc., women find hair to be one of their most essential accessories, and I am honored to be a facilitator.
Tell us about a time when you didn’t know if you would make it.
There was a time in my life that was extremely challenging. Being a single mom was not easy. Like many women, I worked hard to secure the necessities for myself and my child. Time management is so important for single mothers. I always had to be mindful about when and where I focused my efforts. My top priority was to provide quality time to my daughter. It was also crucial for me to focus harder than ever on my career. Juggling, being a mother combined with late nights and early mornings and working towards the overall Indique vision was my life’s story for many years. Looking back, I realize my trials as a single mom sparked the fire that fueled my desire to keep going.
What do you think are the qualities of a great leader?
One of the most important qualities of a great leader is to fully understand the power of creativity. Creativity is where the magic resides! I believe we are here on this planet to fully utilize our imaginations, which allows us to build everything from experiences to products, safe spaces for others, and revamping outdated structures. Everything we create has the potential to contribute to the greater good, which elevates the human experience and forms connections. No matter what field of work or industry you are in, there is always the need for innovation.
Which women are you inspired by in your community?
Our team inspires me. It’s the talented women behind the brand who make everything possible at Indique. Over the years, I have learned so much from these amazing women. The most beautiful clientele also inspires me. Their multifaceted lifestyles play a significant part in my daily mission to answer their hair needs. They continuously motivate me to reach my highest potential.
What is the proudest moment of your career?
The proudest moment in my career was when my mother had the opportunity to attend one of our boutique grand openings in Houston. She was able to see, in person, our client’s and staff’s excitement about the brand. It gave her great joy!
What’s your International Women’s Day message?
Women’s Day is every day for women across the world! As we navigate through life, we are constantly breaking barriers and making tremendous accomplishments. Let’s continue to support and empower one another and be examples for the younger generations of women to come.
