Natural Deodorants for a Sleeveless Summer

by | Fragrances, Makeup

Body odor is the result of skin bacteria mixing with sweat. Most of us have been battling against this natural stank since puberty with Secret, Degree, Old Spice, or one of the like– sticking to the stick that best blocks our not-so-pleasant scents. But in the past few years, there has been a growing movement shunning antiperspirants, with claims that they can cause breast cancer, kidney issues, and more. Is fear this founded?

Let’s start with the basics. There are two major players in this arena: deodorant and antiperspirant. The difference between the two lies in their function: deodorant does exactly what its name implies– it masks the smell of your underarms. Antiperspirant, on the other hand, actually blocks your pores from producing sweat. Many sticks contain both. Antiperspirants however contain aluminum and parabens, which are the leading concern – the theory is that toxins will accumulate in the lymph nodes, and change healthy cells into cancer cells.

But this is just a theory. There are no confirmed studies proving traditional antiperspirants are harmful to your health; too much aluminum in the body IS harmful, but no studies have shown that enough aluminum gets trapped in the body from antiperspirants, leading to cancer. However– there are many bennies to wearing a natural deodorant regardless. They tend to be less irritating, especially for sensitive skin. Look out for brands with no essential oils or aluminum. Even baking soda can be irritating to some; really what it comes down to is personal skin sensitivity. Read on for some of the best natural deodorants out there– and be prepared for delicious-smelling armpits.

Native

Native Stick Deo

Ursa Major’s Hoppin’ Fresh Deodorant is aluminum-free and naturally cooling, as it contains a refreshing blend of eucalyptus, rosemary, and peppermint. The well-reviewed brand also contains kaolin– a soft, mild clay used for its moisture-absorbing properties.
