As of late, the extent of our outdoor ventures has likely decreased. Our social schedule is no longer rife with dinners with friends, or nights on the town. And while this pandemic has temporarily limited our typical activities, we still *sometimes* need to exit our homes and breathe some fresh air; in fact, our mental health depends on this. Why not boost your mood and wardrobe and head out in one of this season’s latest trends in coats & jackets? Even if we haven’t worn anything besides hoodies and leggings for months, top it all off with an of-the-moment coat, and we’re ready for the world. Some heavy hitters are back from last year – i.e., the omnipresent puffer. But newer “shackets” feel fresh and are making a case for jacket layering. See below for 2021’s most popular toppers:
Shackets
This shirt-jacket combo has been popping up in men’s and women’s collections alike- from minimalist Zara options to more rugged plaids by Burton. For colder climates, layer a shacket under an overcoat for fashion-forward (and warm!) styling. Shackets come in all lengths– we love the cropped checkered number from ASOS.
Puffers Still Rule
Puffer coats made their return from the 90’s way back in 2016 — but their appeal has steadfastly remained. Not only are these inflated gems totally utilitarian – keeping us warm while remaining the most comfortable option out there – but there is a whimsical, playful quality that we love about them. Puffers don’t take themselves too seriously, yet still allow us to feel pulled together. This season the trend is more subdued, with neutral colors reigning supreme over the bright versions of years past. The surprisingly simple favorite amongst celebs? The North Face!
Brights à la Amanda Gorman
Winter, especially this one, has us begging for brightness- in all its forms. We found a spot of light in Amanda Gorman, introduced to the world through the reading of her inaugural poem. Her words and aura exude radiance and hope — something our country so desperately needs in this moment. Something else that glowed was her vivid yellow Prada coat– an apt reflection of the joy she has brought us. We are loving wool coats in unexpected hues; J.Crew makes a slew of pretty colors. H&M is also known for their luxe-looking wools for a fraction of designer costs. Add some levity to your own wardrobe with a duster in a happy shade.
Retro Fleece
Another fun return this season has been the throwback fleece. Nubby, half-zip, color-block details are giving us nostalgic vibes that we want for sipping cocoa aprés ski or Netflixing on our couches. Brands like Patagonia and L.L. Bean have OG status, while Uniqlo and Sandy Liang carry fun updated versions.
